Project#2_Theatrical play

POSTER DESIGN

DUE DATE: 10.11

THE ASSIGNMENT
You'll have to design a poster, an mock-up invitation aiming the press and a dvd label for a theatrical play. This project's focus is on originality, creativity and consistency.

THE CONCEPT
Focus, delivery, continuity, creativity and presentation are the essentials of what a poster design encompasses within the realm of visual communication. The success in designing a theatrical event poster depends on, not only the understanding what purpose the content of what the poster depicts, but also understanding the target audience.

THE THEATRICAL POSTER CONTENT
You all will be designing a poster for the Jungalbook by Edward Mast for the Theatre@Chowan Fall production. Professor Steve Harders will choose the poster that better represents the play in the end of the project.

. It's VITAL that you familiarize yourself with the theatrical play. RESEARCH the story and then write a brief synopsis of the key elements and plot/subplot points including a brief description of the characters.

Distill, to the best of your ability, the emotional crux and meaning of the play and design a poster reflecting in a very contemporary/modern fashion way the meaning which you discovered. Posters should be interesting and unique, typographically strong and readable from a distance. All the elements of who, what, where and when should be presented as well as the play.

THE SPECS
_ The poster must be a full bleed graphic.

_ The invitation must have a pocket where the DVD will be inserted, and must be a self-mailer. The invitation must have a unique die-cut, and must be imaginative and creative, since it aims the press as its audience, and it promotes a kids' play. It can be as big, and have as many folds as you want.

_ DVD graphics must be consistent with the two other pieces.

_ You must create an original "logo" for the play.

Text type (body copy) will be discussed in class, but here's part of the information you will use:
Where:
When:

* You'll also need to design a logo for the play.

** The who, what, where and when is usually the essential information along with the play's logo.

RESEARCH
Knowing your subject and imagery is crucial to the success of your design and delivery. Research is required and will be discussed in class individually before the actual design begun. The ability for you to create your own images through photography, illustration, paintings/drawings, collage, mixed media, etc, is the key to this project. (you cannot use existing images. You'll have to create your own). A successful approach will implement broad graphic design stylizations of subject matter along with a creative solution to using type (type works as an image and as information).

FINAL PRESENTATION
_ Poster should be a full bleed 11"x17" or 12"x18" print mounted on whatever type of board you are already using - black, white or chip board.
_ Invitation and DVD label must have their flat designs printed and mounted on board, and you must also submit their dummies.
